Known as kalhapuri saj , a wedding necklace of ‘auspicious units’ - small plaque amulets - is common in southern India, particularly in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Representing luck, happiness, fertility and health, it"s given to the bride by the husband on their wedding day. The necklace is comprised of twenty-six small pendants, each with a different Vaishnavite (Vishnu) or Shaivite (Shiva) symbol, depending on the affiliation of the bride & groom"s families.
