Ruling India from 1526-1858, the Mughal rulers’ penchant for jewels is legendary; descriptions from visitors to their courts provide a mind-boggling view of the riches they observed. Sir Thomas Roe, 17th century English ambassador, described the Mughal Court as ‘the treasury of the world.’ Traditional colors - those of emeralds, rubies (or spinel), sapphires and pearls - prevailed. This pendant may represent Lakshmi (the center emerald) in the midst of the lotus garden (red spinels).

An antique 20K-22K Mughal-style Indian pendant with a smooth emerald cabochon in the middle, as well as tiny dangles of white pearls topped with tiny emerald beads, surrounded by small cabochons of red spinel. On handmade 18K chain with four emerald "stations."
