A vaishnava Thali (Tamil) or Mangala sutram (Hindi) - meaning "holy, auspicious - is a necklace that is given in India and Sri Lanka by the groom"s family to the bride. It roughly equates to the Western meaning of the wedding ring. Each region and religious sect, including Christian and Muslim, has its own traditional thali design. A double thali like this is worn by Vaishnavite Brahmans.
